In biomedical and health fields, data has become essential in every aspect. Different kinds of data, such as various -omics data and clinical data, have increased dramatically, both in terms of volume and complexity. Furthermore, the rate of data accumulation is accelerating. Big data pose great challenges in all fields, but challenges are even bigger in biomedical/health domain given the complexity of biological systems and the problems researchers are interested in. At the same time, recent advances in computational approaches and systems in AI and machine learning have revolutionary impacts in many different areas. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed weaknesses in our public health system, research enterprises, and society in general. At AI-HAPP, we leverage increasingly available data and powerful computational technologies, with the goal to create computational solutions and systems to better detect, predict, and prevent future pandemics.
